2021 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

Our 2021 Annual conference is going to be online again... A rich and interesting program in a virtual environment.  The theme of the 2021 conference is “Bringing the Manager Back in Management”. The Management Consulting (MC) Division encourages MC division members and colleagues from other divisions to submit academic papers, field reports, case studies, and symposia proposals for the 2021 conference.

Our Division supports both qualitative and quantitative research. MC promotes research that connects and bridges the academic and the non-academic spheres, bridging worlds that do not always talk (to) or understand each other.

Topics for submission may include the application of theory in the field, the generation of new theory in the field, and papers with a strong practical and/or an experience-based orientation. We are looking for submissions that relate to all aspects of the field of consultancy (theory, research, teaching and practice), especially as applied to this year’s theme.

Managers exist in all organizations, corporations, non-profit organizations, state-owned organizations, family businesses, or consulting companies. Some possible questions to ponder:  How do current trends or uncertainties impact the role of the manager? What is the role of the consulting world in understanding, explaining, and predicting these evolutions? How can the consulting world prescribe what are the best practices for the future in all areas where managers are involved?

The Academy of Management plays an important role in producing and disseminating a thorough understanding of the challenges that are at the forefront of the role of the manager.  Extending the theme of the role of the manager to the specific work we do in management consulting, we may consider a variety of research questions:

  • How can research on methodologies of research contribute to the focus on the manager?
  • How could a renewed role of the manager change our goal of bridging practice of consulting, as well as the academic knowledge and teaching of consulting?
  • Does the evolution of the role of the managers in client companies impact our knowledge and practice of consulting?
  • What do we know about the future of the consulting industry? How do macro changes affect this industry?
  • How does the AI and technological systems development modify the role and responsibilities of managers?
  • How will the sociological evolutions (diversity; fairness; ethics; generational changes) impact the role and attributes of managers?
  • Why is it important to study the evolution of management in organizations?
We look forward to receiving your papers that will help answer these relevant issues.

The Annual conference theme plays a guiding role, however submissions may concern any topic in the area of management consulting whether it relates to the overall conference theme or not.

We strongly encourage submissions from practitioners and scholar-practitioners (including doctoral students) who want to share and reflect on field experience. This field experience should either be connected to existing theory or generate new theory. Our division is proud to offer a place where seasoned scholar-practitioners share warmth and wisdom, and junior faculty members and doctoral students enjoy a great opportunity to develop their work. We pride ourselves on the quality of our review process, particularly the quality feedback given by our reviewers. Submitting a paper to the MCD offers an excellent opportunity for growth to both senior scholars and novice writers alike.

The MC Division depends on wonderful reviewers annually and we hope you will join us in providing high quality reviews to our members yourself, whether or not you submit a paper.

Submission Process: Please carefully review all the submission guidelines and formatting instructions before submitting. All submissions must be made through the AOM Submission Center. All authors of multi-author papers must be noted as such by the lead or contact author when they are submitted. Student papers should be clearly identified as such during the online submission process to take advantage of the extra development opportunities and awards available for students.

Please make a note of these key dates as you prepare your submission and sign up to review. The Submission Center will be available starting early December 2020 and closes Tuesday, 12 January 2021 at 5:00pm ET (NY Time). Earlier submissions are encouraged, as the Submission Center may slow down during the last few days. The earlier your submission, the easier for the review process to unfold.

Division Awards: The MC Division offers several best paper awards:

  1. The Information Age Publishing Outstanding Doctoral Student Paper Award.
  2. The Thomson South-Western Award for Outstanding Research Based Paper on Management Consulting.
  3. The Benedictine University Award for Best Paper on Ethical Issues in Consulting
  4. The Benedictine University Scholar-Practitioner Research Award.
  5. The Management Consulting Division Award for Best Field Report/Practice Paper.
  6. The University-Enterprise Cooperation Award from the Management Institute.
All award winners will be celebrated at the MCD business meeting, which will take place online during the conference time.
